Our Tips for Authentic Photos in the Rain

Rain may be wet. But beyond this cliché, a rainy day is also an opportunity to take lots of original and aesthetic photos.

But what to photograph in the rain?

Where there's rain, there are clouds

During rainy weather, what could be more beautiful than a sky full of big, thick clouds. Majestic and imposing, they can create a very special, almost mysterious atmosphere. So lift your head towards the sky and shoot the clouds. During a storm, the show is even more impressive. For an even more striking result, consider photographing the skies in black and white.

Don't forget that clouds are your allies. Indeed, they make the light softer and more even. So no more unflattering shadows like when taking photos in bright sunlight.

Play with the rain

There are those who sing or dance in the rain and those who photograph it. Here's how to use it for original snapshots.

To capture raindrops, consider using a very fast shutter speed. But be careful, choose a rather dark background and position yourself so that light highlights the raindrops. Without that, they will not stand out.

For your photos, you can also use the streaks left on the windows by the rain. You'll enjoy all sorts of very interesting, even poetic visual effects. By focusing on the drops running down the window, you'll almost obtain an abstract painting. By setting your camera on the scenery, located in the background behind the window, you'll create a somewhat dreamy image. So it's up to you to create unique images!

Look for the most beautiful reflections

After the rain comes fair weather but especially puddles. And these are sources of superb snapshots, if done right. Walk around with your eyes glued to the ground to spot a piece of urban or natural landscape that reflects in a puddle. That could give a whole other dimension to your photo.

Also observe the beautiful shine of the asphalt or cobblestones after the rain. You will get unique images from them. Not to mention the drops that stay clinging to branches, on flowers or spider webs.

Umbrellas are out

When it rains, you will have noticed that umbrellas invade the street. This is the opportunity to take fun photos of this crowd of umbrellas. But for this, think about placing yourself a bit high up, overlooking this tide of pedestrians sheltering under their umbrellas.
